There are numerous gutter guard products on the market, some expensive, some cheap, and some that far outperform others.

Most gutter guards fit inside the gutter and generally tend to collect more debris than they shed. Some sit up higher than the roof surface which creates a barrier, whilst others slope back towards the roof and form a “v” which traps leaf debris.

All-Flow’s ski-slope system extends the “roof pitch line” to the outer edge of the gutter. The mesh screen supports the leaf debris, allowing normal wind action to circulate and blow leaf debris to the ground, “simple but effective.”

This proven method has been used successfully for over 15 years and is the preferred system by installers due to its effectiveness and versatility.

Rigorous testing has shown All-Flow’s 3.5mm raised aperture mesh to be the optimum size in preventing the majority of debris from entering the gutters, whilst accepting the heaviest of rainfall.

Larger mesh 5mm+ may collect all the water, but also allows excess debris to enter the gutter. Leaf stems and twigs are easily snagged in the larger mesh.

Smaller mesh, 1mm flyscreen mesh may stop the majority of fine debris from entering the gutters. However, on steep-pitched roofs, rainwater tends to “sheet” across the mesh rather than through it, defeating the purpose of having gutters.

Silt may also accumulate in the finer mesh, supporting fungus growth.

Very fine mesh may also prevent see-through inspection of gutters.

Despite claims of 100% maintenance-free gutter guards, all systems will require periodic maintenance inspections if they are to continue working effectively.

There are many factors to consider regarding the type of system and maintenance:

• The density and type of foliage and its proximity to the roof.
• The profile and pitch of the roof.
• The style and fall of gutters and valleys.

All-Flow’s “ski slope’ system, if correctly installed on a standard pitch roof of 20-25 degrees with average foliage, should require minimal maintenance.

However, lower-pitched roofs and valleys with above-average fallout may require routine inspection.

Generally, an air blower during the autumn fall is sufficient to remove leaf buildup in these areas.

Pine needles and some finer pollen may enter the mesh but is usually flushed out during heavy rainfall.

All-Flow’s see-through mesh makes gutter inspection simple. If any fine silt build-up should occur, it can be easily removed with an air blower or garden hose without the need to remove the mesh.

When correctly installed, All-Flow Gutter Mesh will prevent birds from entering along the gutter line and valley. However, all points of entry including chimney flashings, gable ends etc. require attention to ensure your roof cavity is vermin-proof.

When correctly installed, All-Flow’s metal mesh will not be chewed or removed by birds or possums, ensuring a cleaner healthier environment in your roof space.

Dry leaf build-up in gutters and valleys has been noted by fire authorities as a potential bushfire hazard. The All-Flow system prevents leaf build-up in gutters. However, roofs of low pitch may still accumulate some leaf debris, especially on valley mesh, during seasons of heavy foliage fallout. Therefore, periodic inspection is recommended.

Yes, it will be visible from the ground. However, as it is colour coded to match your roof and the open mesh allows the roof profile to show through, it is virtually indetectable when compared to the thicker plastic mesh that most suppliers offer.

Whilst it is obviously more noticeable than mesh that fits inside your gutter, the more important question to ask is, do those other gutter guards work as well as the All-Flow ‘ski slope’ system?

A cheap roll of low-grade plastic mesh with 10mm holes purchased from the local hardware store that you lay in the gutter yourself will keep out some of the larger leaf debris. However, the gutters will soon become blocked and within a short period, you will need to go through the dangerous time-consuming task of removing it and cleaning the gutters repeatedly in order to maintain clean gutters.

A quality product installed correctly by a professional tradesperson obviously comes at a price, but considering it works effectively, eliminates the dangerous time-consuming task of gutter cleaning and is guaranteed to perform for at least 15 years, it certainly equates to good worry-free value over its lifetime.
